HOLD. THE LINE

Several major news sources have “leaked” a supposed memorandum of understanding, allegedly signed by President Donald Trump, which lays the ground work for an upcoming resolution between the United States and Iran.

Per NPR, here are the considerations each country will offer as laid out in the MoU:

BOTH- UNITED STATES AND IRAN

• “The immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and undertake from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other, and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other.” There is no wording to express who the specific “allies” are, but there is language to express that the Final Deal will confirm cessation of war and other provisions mentioned in the paragraph.
• Iran and the United States of America agree to respect one another’s sovereignty and will cease from meddling in one another’s internal affairs.
• Both countries commit to working towards negotiations that will allow for agreeance on a final deal within 60 days.

IRAN

• Signing of the MoU will invoke the Republic of Iran to allow for safe passage through the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. This will be allowed for the 60 days covering the MoU, and during which time the Final Deal is being prepared. Safe passage will be granted without charge (60 days only). For this part of the agreement, Iran will be responsible for consulting with the Sultanate of Oman about the logistics of this allowance, to include the coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz and the territories surrounding the Persian Gulf.
• Agrees not to procure or develop or nuclear weapons. They also agree to get rid of the current stockpile of nuclear enrichment material they possess for the creation of nuclear weapons. Final details on a mutually agreed upon method will be hashed out in the Final Deal. They agree to “maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program.”

UNITED STATES

• The United States will remove all naval blockades against Iran within 30 days.
• The U.S., along with its “regional partners,” will develop a mutually agreed upon plan to funnel $300 billion TO Iran for the “reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The details of implementation will be included in the Final Deal.
• U.S will eliminate all sanctions against Iran. The Final Deal will detail the relief relevant to this consideration.
• Upon the signing of the MoU, the U.S. Department of Treasury will issue waivers for the export of Iranian crude oil. Also, the U.S. intends to make all frozen or restricted assets of Iran in its possession available to Iran’s Central Bank.

What is significantly left out of this supposed memorandum is the state of Israel as a party to the agreement. This is significant due to persistent reporting of this conflict by mainstream media as the ‘US-Israel and Iran war.’
