Requesting the Secretary of the Interior to authorize unique and one-time arrangements for displays on the National Mall and the Washington Monument during the period beginning on December 31, 2025, and ending on January 5, 2026.
Both houses came together in unanimous agreement to pass a joint resolution requesting budget approval for the purposes of creating programming and festivities in celebration of 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All related festivities in commemoration of this anniversary are being heralded by the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.

LISTEN: Liz Covart of New York Almanack hosted a podcast episode with historians who say they want to see more accuracy and inclusion in America’s celebration of independence this year.
Celebrations are being planned across the United States, but the National Mall will be the premier location, with images related to America’s independence being projected onto the Washington Monument for a total of five nights. Displays will reflect, “semiquincentennial materials and other significant artifacts, digital content, film footage, and associated audio and imagery in and around the vicinity of the National Mall,” beginning December 31, 2025 and ending January 5, 2026. This time frame was chosen, as the committee feels it is a perfect capture of the time transition between the 249th year into the 250th year of America’s independence.
